Why I chose this wine
A fresh and elegant white from the hills of Verona
CDG Cantina del Garda Soave DOC is a beautifully fresh Italian white made from 100% Garganega, the signature grape of Soave.
Produced in Veneto near Verona the romantic city of Romeo and Juliet this wine captures everything we love about everyday Italian white wine freshness, delicate yellow fruit, a soft texture and effortless versatility at the table.
It is crisp without being sharp, fruity without being sweet and light enough for aperitivo while still having the character and texture to accompany an entire meal.
What is Soave?
Soave is one of northern Italy’s historic white-wine appellations, located east of Verona in the Veneto region.
The name is pronounced “so-AH-vay” and is often translated as “gentle,” “smooth” or “pleasant”a fitting description for the wine’s harmonious personality.
Unlike Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, Soave is made primarily from Garganega, a native Italian grape known for its delicate floral aromas, yellow fruit, citrus freshness and subtle almond character.
The DOC designation Denominazione di Origine Controllata protects the wine’s regional identity and confirms that it has been produced according to the appellation’s established requirements.
Discover Garganega
Garganega is one of Italy’s most important native white grapes, yet it remains far less familiar in Australia than Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay.
Naturally late ripening, it can retain freshness while developing flavours of yellow apple, pear, lemon, peach and delicate Mediterranean flowers. Depending on the vineyard and winemaking, it may also show subtle herbal, mineral or almond notes.
If you enjoy Pinot Grigio but want something with a little more texture, or unoaked Chardonnay but prefer a lighter and fresher style, this Soave is a beautiful wine to discover.
The vineyard
The Garganega vines grow in clay-rich soils, which retain moisture and help the grapes ripen gradually through Veneto’s warm growing season.
These soils contribute to the wine’s rounded, velvety texture while preserving the freshness that makes Soave such a versatile food wine.
The result is a white with more softness and substance than a very lean, neutral style, but without heaviness or obvious oak.
The Cantina del Garda story
Cantina del Garda began in April 1958 as the Cantina Sociale Veronese del Garda, originally formed by just 11 growers and a small number of vineyards.
Today, Cantina del Garda also known as CDG is part of Cantine Vitevis, an agricultural cooperative connecting growers, employees and collaborators across the complete production chain.
The CDG collection was created to celebrate the traditional appellations surrounding Verona and Lake Garda. Its label takes inspiration from historic Veronese design, combining the region’s classical heritage with a simple, timeless elegance.
A more responsible approach
Cantine Vitevis uses precision viticulture to monitor irrigation, fertilisation and the natural balance between vine growth and fruit production.
Its sustainability program includes:
Reduced use of chemical products in agricultural practices
Controlled irrigation and targeted fertilisation
Electricity generated through photovoltaic systems
Reduced annual energy consumption
Packaging and glass made using recycled materials
Certified carbon credits to offset emissions generated by bottle production
IFS Food and BRCGS systems supporting traceability throughout the supply chain
What does it taste like?
Pale straw yellow in the glass, this Soave opens with expressive aromas of ripe yellow apple, pear and white peach.
The palate is harmonious, fresh and velvety, combining bright fruit with a gentle softness. Its natural acidity keeps the wine refreshing, while Garganega provides enough texture to make it feel complete rather than thin.
The finish is clean and balanced, with lingering yellow fruit and a subtle savoury quality that encourages another sip.
Is it sweet?
No. This is a dry white wine.
Its ripe yellow fruit aromas may give an impression of softness, but the palate remains fresh, balanced and food-friendly. It is an excellent choice for drinkers who want an easy white without obvious sweetness or aggressive acidity.
An elegant, food-friendly Italian white that proves discovering a new grape does not need to feel intimidating.
