Why we chose this wine
This wine holds a special place in my heart because it comes from the Southern Rhône, the region of France where I was born. Its warmth, wild herbs and generous flavours immediately take me home.
Le Bouquet des Garrigues is made by Sylvie Vacheron and winemaker Bruno Gaspard at Le Clos du Caillou, an organically certified family estate in Courthézon. The vineyards lie directly beside Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on clay soils covered with the same famous rounded stones that absorb the daytime sun and release its warmth during the night.
There is also an extraordinary story behind the estate. When officials came to map the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in 1936, the property was still a private hunting reserve and its armed guards refused them entry. The land was consequently left outside the official boundary. This is why Le Bouquet des Garrigues is labelled Côtes du Rhône, despite coming from exceptional terroir surrounded by Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards.
The 2022 is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre, Carignan and Counoise. The grapes are picked and sorted by hand. Most are destemmed and naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats for 27 days, while 20% undergoes whole bunch carbonic maceration to bring freshness and vibrant fruit.
It is then matured for 24 months 60% in concrete and 40% in large oak foudres. These large seasoned oak vessels do not create a heavy or strongly oaked taste. Instead, they gently soften the wine and add complexity while preserving its beautiful fruit and sense of place.
Juicy and elegant, with blackberry, blueberry and cherry layered with cinnamon, white pepper, black tea and the wild herbal scent of the garrigue. It has the richness and depth you might expect from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but with wonderful freshness and drinkability a beautiful taste of the region I still call home.

The wine and its maker
A historic Rhône cuvée from the edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Why we chose Le Bouquet des Garrigues
This is a Southern Rhône red with generosity and real definition. Dark fruit and warm spice give it depth, while garrigue herbs, juicy freshness and fine tannins keep the wine energetic at the table rather than heavy.
On the edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The fruit comes from the lieux-dits Le Coudoulet and Les Garrigues, where clay soils are covered with rounded river stones. These vineyards sit directly on the border of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, giving this Côtes-du-Rhône much of the warmth, texture and savoury character associated with its famous neighbour.
The 2022 blend
Grenache makes up 70% of the wine, with 15% Syrah and the remaining 15% shared between Mourvèdre, Carignan and Counoise. Grenache brings generous fruit, Syrah adds colour and pepper, and the supporting varieties build aromatic complexity and structure.
The 2022 growing season was exceptionally hot and dry, followed by a well-timed August rain and cleansing Mistral wind. Careful picking decisions produced grapes with concentration and ripeness while preserving balance and freshness.
Hand harvested and slowly raised
The grapes were harvested and sorted by hand. Most of the fruit was destemmed and fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts over a 27-day maceration; the remaining 20% underwent whole-cluster carbonic maceration for 14 days.
The wine then matured for 24 months, 60% in concrete tanks and 40% in large foudres. This builds texture and depth without covering the vineyard character in obvious oak.
What it tastes like
Blackberry, blueberry and cherry meet black tea and warm spice on the nose. The palate is juicy and elegant, adding cinnamon, white pepper and the dried-herb character of the surrounding scrubland. Its long aromatic finish also gives the wine strong ageing potential.
How to serve it
Serve at 16-18°C and give it 20-30 minutes of air. It is excellent with confit lamb, seared tuna or roasted goat cheese; the producer also suggests savoury dishes such as duck, pepper-and-chorizo risotto and baked Saint-Marcellin.
