Why we chose this wine
Tucked just south of Burgundy, Beaujolais is often known for its reds but its whites feel like a quiet secret. Here, Chardonnay grows on gentle, sunlit hills near Lyon my city the natural gateway to this landscape you’ve always held close.
Beaujolais Blanc is made with a light, careful touch: pressed gently, fermented in a classic way, sometimes rested on its lees to bring a soft, rounded texture. Nothing excessive just balance, purity, and a quiet kind of charm.
In the glass, it opens with pear, citrus, and white flowers. On the palate, it’s smooth and lightly creamy, with a clean, lingering finish that feels effortless.
But more than the wine, it’s the place. Beaujolais is the region I grow up with, not just visit. A place where time stretches a little longer, where I spent so much of my younger years, and where there was always a neighbour dropping by bottle in hand, just sharing what they had and long afternoons with someone else dropping pass.
That’s the spirit of Beaujolais Blanc: understated, warm, and deeply human. A wine that doesn’t try too hard because it doesn’t need to.

The wine and its maker
A bright Beaujolais Chardonnay made for the table.
Why we chose Cuvée Alexis
Beaujolais is famous for Gamay, but its white wines reveal a quieter and often overlooked side of the region. Alexis is 100% Chardonnay: bright, food-friendly and gently textured, with enough freshness to feel effortless from aperitivo through to dinner.
Seven generations at Domaine de la Bêche
Domaine de la Bêche was founded by Henri Depardon in 1848 and has passed from father to son for seven generations. Olivier Depardon took over four hectares in 1985 and, with his wife Ghislaine, expanded and modernised the estate while continuing to make both red and white Beaujolais.
Today the next generation is closely involved. Alexis works the family's Morgon Côte du Py vineyards, while Caroline joined the estate in 2018 to manage the commercial side. Cuvée Alexis carries that family name into the domaine's fresh, precise expression of Chardonnay.
The white side of Beaujolais
Chardonnay represents only a small part of the Beaujolais vineyard, thriving particularly on marl and limestone soils. Here it gives wines that balance citrus and white-fleshed fruit with floral detail, gentle roundness and a fine mineral line.
What the 2024 tastes like
The producer describes a pale, brilliant yellow wine with fresh pear, apple and citrus, followed by a light floral note. The palate is lively and balanced rather than heavy, with delicate texture, clear fruit and mineral freshness carrying into an elegant, thirst-quenching finish.
How to serve it
Serve at about 10°C in a wide white-wine glass. It is excellent with fish, seafood, salads and fresh cheese; at Alessa, we also love its brightness with seafood pasta, roast chicken and Comté. Open it for aperitivo, a long lunch or an easy dinner.
