Why we chose this wine
Angela Fronti’s mountain Chianti
Istine is Angela Fronti’s family estate in Radda in Chianti. The Fronti family began acquiring vineyards here in 1982, and Angela released the first wine under the Istine name in 2009. Today the estate farms around 20 hectares across the high slopes of Radda and neighbouring Gaiole, with certified-organic viticulture at the heart of the work.
From three distinct hillsides
This Chianti Classico brings together Sangiovese from Istine and Casanova dell’Aia in Radda, Cavarchione in Gaiole, and small parcels at Tibuca and Le Noci. At roughly 500 metres above sea level, alberese and galestro limestone soils give the wine its brightness, savoury detail and fine-boned structure.
How it is made
The grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel for 15–20 days, followed by three to eight weeks of skin contact. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in concrete and stainless steel, then matures for 12 months in large 10, 20 and 40-hectolitre Slavonian-oak casks, with a portion retained in concrete.
What it tastes like
Sour red cherry and smoked strawberry lead into fresh marjoram, balsamic herbs and a gentle earthy note. The palate is medium-bodied and energetic, with vivid acidity, fine savoury tannins and the composed freshness that marks high-altitude Chianti Classico.
At the table
Serve at 16–18°C in a medium tulip-shaped red-wine glass. It is excellent with pappardelle al ragù, roast game, mushroom or truffle risotto, hearty casseroles and aged pecorino.
