Specogna Malvasia Colli Orientali DOC 2021
“A Golden Whisper from Friuli – Aromatic, Wild & Wonderfully Textured”
Friuli Colli Orientali, Italy
The Story: Place, People & Purpose
In the far northeastern corner of Italy—where Alpine forests meet Slovenian hills—Specogna is a family-run winery that champions Friuli’s indigenous grapes. Here, in the Colli Orientali, Malvasia Istriana thrives in mineral-rich marl soils.
Winemaker Cristian Specogna, now the third generation, farms organically and works gently in the cellar to preserve purity and depth. This Malvasia is his nod to old-world Friulian tradition—with a modern lift of precision and grace. No heavy-handed winemaking, just beautiful fruit, time, and terroir.
Tasting Notes: What It Feels Like
Aromas bloom with white peach, orange blossom, chamomile, ripe pear, and just a hint of crushed herbs. The palate is silky and layered, with a gorgeous interplay of texture and acidity—round but not heavy. There’s a lingering saline note and a touch of citrus oil on the finish. Like a summer orchard after rain—fresh, fragrant, and alive.
Perfect Pairings: Food & Feeling
Pour this with grilled prawns, lemony roast chicken, burrata and fennel salad, or even a tagliolini with white truffle. It's a perfect white for foodies—aromatic enough to lift spicy or creamy dishes, yet elegant enough to sip on its own. Serve it with linen napkins… or barefoot in the backyard.
What Makes It Stand Out
✔️ Indigenous grape: Malvasia Istriana – grown only in Friuli and Slovenia
✔️ Organic farming – hand-harvested on hillside vineyards
✔️ Partial lees aging – subtle texture without oak
✔️ Family-run estate with a minimalist winemaking philosophy
💡 Think Viognier meets Riesling—only wilder, drier, and more Italian.
