Why we chose this wine
A powerful Rhône red with freshness, honesty and a real sense of place
Domaine Chaume-Arnaud Vinsobres 2020 is a deep, generous southern Rhône red that combines ripe fruit and structure with the freshness of high altitude vineyards.
Made primarily from Grenache, supported by Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre, it opens with dark berries, black cherry, violet and the wild herbal aromas of the Mediterranean landscape.
The palate is full and expansive, with concentrated black fruit, pepper, dried herbs and a subtle dark-chocolate character. The tannins are present but beautifully integrated, giving the wine structure and length without making it feel hard or heavy.
This is a serious red, but it remains balanced, generous and easy to bring to the table.
What is Vinsobres?
Vinsobres is a small appellation in the southern Rhône Valley, located in the northern part of the Drôme Provençale.
Once included within the broader Côtes du Rhône Villages category, Vinsobres was awarded its own appellation in 2006 in recognition of the distinctive quality and personality of its red wines.
The vineyards rise across hillsides and elevated terraces, with some sites reaching approximately 500 metres above sea level. These higher elevations experience cooler nights than many other parts of the southern Rhône.
That temperature difference allows the grapes to ripen fully while preserving acidity, aromatic detail and freshness.
The result is a distinctive expression of the southern Rhône powerful and sun-filled, but often more lifted, structured and restrained than wines from warmer neighbouring areas.
Discover the Rhône blend
Grenache forms the heart of this wine, bringing ripe red and black fruit, warmth and generosity.
Syrah adds colour, pepper, violet and structure, while Carignan contributes savoury depth and Mourvèdre brings spice, tannin and a darker, more earthy character.
Together, the varieties create a layered red with the richness expected from the southern Rhône, balanced by the freshness that defines Vinsobres.
If you enjoy Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas or richer Grenache based wines but want something slightly fresher and less imposing, Vinsobres is a beautiful appellation to discover.
The vineyard
The Chaume-Arnaud family farms vineyards across Vinsobres and Saint-Maurice-sur-Eygues.
Their Vinsobres vines grow in stony clay limestone soils on sunny, south facing slopes overlooking Mont Ventoux. These soils retain enough moisture to support the vines through the warm Mediterranean growing season while providing the drainage needed for healthy, concentrated fruit.
The domaine’s vineyards benefit from altitude, sunlight and cooler evening temperatures. This combination helps create wines with ripe fruit and natural power without sacrificing freshness.
Older vines are selected for this cuvée, bringing additional depth, concentration and complexity.
The Domaine Chaume-Arnaud story
Valérie Chaume-Arnaud studied viticulture and oenology before returning to her family’s farm in 1987.
At the time, the property still practised mixed farming, and Valérie began with approximately five hectares of vines. Together with her husband, Philippe, she gradually transformed the property into a dedicated wine estate.
They assumed responsibility for the entire domaine in 1999 and expanded it to approximately 38 hectares across Vinsobres and Saint-Maurice-sur-Eygues. Their son Thibaud later joined the family estate.
Today, Domaine Chaume-Arnaud is recognised for honest, terroir driven wines that combine the natural generosity of the southern Rhône with balance, freshness and purity.
Vinsobres is the domaine’s signature wine and represents around half of its production.
A more responsible approach
Domaine Chaume-Arnaud began working organically in 2003 and moved towards biodynamic farming in 2004.
The family’s approach focuses on healthy soils, balanced vines and allowing the vineyards to express themselves without unnecessary intervention.
The absence of barrel ageing is intentional. By using tanks, the family preserves the purity of the fruit and the natural freshness of its elevated terroir rather than covering the wine with oak flavour.
What does it taste like?
Deep and intense in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet and ripe plum.
As it develops in the glass, it reveals black olive, cracked pepper, dried Mediterranean herbs and a subtle note of bitter cocoa.
The palate is full bodied, supple and concentrated, with generous dark fruit supported by fine, well-integrated tannins. There is plenty of depth, but the wine never feels excessively heavy or overripe.
Freshness runs through the palate, bringing energy and definition before a long, savoury finish of dark fruit, spice and herbs.
Should I decant it?
Yes. Opening the bottle approximately one hour before serving will help the aromas and texture unfold.
A decanter will allow the dark fruit, violet, pepper and herbal notes to become more expressive while helping the tannins feel softer and more integrated.
Serve it at 16–18°C rather than warm room temperature.
What should I drink it with?
This is a natural wine for slow, generous meals.
Its dark fruit, spice and herbal character work particularly well with roast lamb, braised beef, grilled meat, game and pepper-based sauces.
